Brigadeiro is a classic Brazilian dessert known for its rich, fudgy texture and delightful chocolate flavor. These bite-sized treats are made with sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter, then rolled in chocolate sprinkles for a perfect finish. Traditionally served at birthday parties and celebrations, Brigadeiro is easy to make and requires just a few ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 14 oz 1 can (395 g) sweetened condensed milk

  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (plus extra for greasing hands)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for extra flavor)

  • Chocolate sprinkles (or shredded coconut, crushed nuts, or cocoa powder for coating)

Directions

  • Prepare the Mixture
In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter.
Stir continuously with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to ensure the mixture does not burn or stick to the pan.
  • Cook the Brigadeiro
Keep stirring for about 10-15 minutes until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides and bottom of the pan. The consistency should be thick enough that when you drag the spoon through the middle, it leaves a clear path before slowly merging back together.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using.
  • Cool the Mixture
Transfer the mixture to a greased plate or tray and let it cool to room temperature (about 30 minutes). You can also refrigerate it for faster cooling.
  • Shape and Coat
Once cooled, grease your hands lightly with butter to prevent sticking. Scoop out small portions (about a teaspoon or tablespoon) and roll them into smooth balls.
Roll each ball in chocolate sprinkles or your preferred coating, ensuring they are fully covered.
  • 5: Serve and Enjoy
Place the finished Brigadeiros on a serving plate or in mini cupcake liners for a decorative touch.
Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

  • Additional Tips
For a richer chocolate flavor, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
You can substitute sprinkles with finely chopped nuts, desiccated coconut, or crushed cookies for variety.
For extra creamy Brigadeiros, add a pinch of salt or a tablespoon of heavy cream while cooking.
