Ingredients
- For the Filling:
1 lb (450g) beef or pork sausage meat (or a mix of both)
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 small carrot, grated
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup)
1 tsp Dijon or yellow mustard
1 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped)
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
- For the Pastry:
2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)
1 tbsp sesame or poppy seeds (optional, for garnish)
Directions
- Step 1: Prepare the Filling
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, grated carrot, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, mustard, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Mix thoroughly using your hands or a spoon until well combined.
- Step 2: Assemble the Sausage Rolls
- Place the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet in half to make 4 rectangles.
- Divide the sausage mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into long logs.
- Lay a sausage log down the center of each pastry rectangle.
- Brush one edge of the pastry with the beaten egg wash, then fold the pastry over the sausage filling to enclose it. Press the edges together to seal.
- Use a fork to crimp the edges slightly for a decorative touch.
- Cut each roll into 4 smaller pieces (or keep them larger if you prefer).
- Step 3: Baking the Sausage Rolls
- Place the sausage rolls onto the prepared baking tray, seam side down.
- Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds for extra crunch.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up.
- Step 4: Serve & Enjoy!
- Let the sausage rolls cool slightly before serving.
- Serve warm with tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, or your favorite dip.
